HUMMER’s Recreation Rescue

OVERVIEW
HUMMER and Tread Lightly! have announced the launch of a new partnership called HUMMER’s Recreation Rescue, which will provide grants to outdoor recreation sites. The grants will be dedicated towards land use education, management and trail maintenance.  At least $25,000 in grants will be given away in 2008.

HUMMER’s Recreation Rescue was created under the umbrella of Tread Lightly!’s Restoration for Recreation program. Restoration for Recreation is designed to keep the great outdoors beautiful, healthy and open to the public by providing much needed resources for trail maintenance, education and communications initiatives to allow for environmentally sustainable outdoor recreation.

HUMMER is a division of General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer. HUMMER is a premium off-road vehicle manufacturer with sales in 37 countries and a product line-up that consists of the H2, H2 SUT, H3, H3x, and award-winning H3 Alpha. TO VOLUNTEER
As part of this "rescue effort," we will need dedicated, hard working volunteers who want to make a difference for their sport and the great outdoors.  Volunteers will be needed to re-seed, install signage and kiosks, build trail enhancements and do other important tasks.  Check each project for volunteer opportunities.

PROJECTS SELECTED

Bald Mountain Project, Sierra National Forest, California

Bald Mountain Project, Sierra National Forest, California
The Bald Mountain project entails the improvement and stabilization of an existing four wheel drive trail.  A half-mile section of the trail receives heavy run-off during storm events, leading to trail erosion.  This section is located where stream bank restoration is also necessary.  Several “cheater routes” will also be restored. Finally, a brochure and map of the trail will be created to guide public along this restored designated route.

Volunteers will be needed to move some rocks, do some shovel work, and do some "armoring" of the creek-- which means laying flat rock down on the stream bed to prevent dibilitating erosion.
Other groups participating.  Clovis Independent Four Wheelers, Mountain Toppers Four Wheel Drive Club of Fresno, California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, Inc, California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs Safety and Eduction Foundation, Inc., Californians for Public Access, Inc, (Cal Access) and Lock and Low Four Wheel Drive Club of Visalia.

A Full Plate

Wildfires in the west; floods in the midwest; rising fuel prices throughout the country; home foreclosures soar; financial institutions in trouble; airlines cut back flights; truckers park their trucks because they can't afford to fill up the tank; the auto industry shuts down plants because no one wants to buy an SUV; and our soldiers continue to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq. And, if this isn't enough, it's an election year as well.

I have listed just some of the challenges facing our nation and you no doubt can add to this litany of woes. I prepared this list as a reminder that we face some serious issues ahead... issues requiring politicians to put country above party.

Urgent Action Required
I have been receiving a lot of e-mails and requests from our members wanting to know why the BLM has not scheduled any meetings in the San Joaquin Valley.  Needless to say we have asked Rick Cooper at the Santa Clara and Hollister public scoping meetings to have at least two meetings here in the valley.  We requested one should be held in Fresno and one in Visalia.

I guess that the BLM is not listening to the public.  Its time to rattle their cage.

What we have found out at the last two public scoping meetings that if you do not show up and give your public input, that later in the planning process you will NOT BE ALLOWED to give any input.

We feel it is time to stand up and be heard loud and clear.  Below you will find the contact info for the BLM Hollister field office.  Please no matter where you live, take a moment from your busy day and e-mail or call the office and request that Rick Cooper hold two public scoping meetings here in the valley.  Request that one should be in Fresno and the other in Vasilia.
